Lawson has said he had Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and Frank Capra’s A Wonderful Life in mind when plotting the course of Teddy’s path towards moral enlightenment. The rueful note that starts to colour Spall’s delivery helps a lot. The only consolation is that Teddy starts to slow down with age and disappointment and become slightly more bearable. So his life speeds on into middle age while Lawson spins out this conceit in a series of domestic snapshots that become increasingly predictable. This radical touch of magic realism is aimed at giving Teddy a lesson he’ll never forget about the importance of seizing the day lest the day – or the year – starts flashing by in minutes without giving him a chance to enjoy, appreciate or understand it. Then she sends him a cryptic wedding gift – an unlabelled tin can with a card telling him not to open it for 10 years. He and Leanne are visiting his father’s grave and after overhearing their conversation and guessing they’re to be married, this strangely censorious fairy godmother figure treats him to an impromptu lecture on the dangers of procrastination before persuading him to advance the wedding date. ![]() ![]() The clue to Teddy’s predicament lies with Noni Hazlehurst, who makes a cameo appearance in an early scene as a mysterious woman he comes across seemingly by chance at Waverley Cemetery. Zahra Newman plays the long-suffering Leanne. ![]()
